Genio is a Celtic project with number: C06-008

Project duration: 11/2009 - 10/2011

Objectives

1. Remote management of the home network

The project GENIO will take into consideration the main existent standards in the area (extra-home and intra-home management standards e.g. TR-069, OMA-DM, UPnP/DLNA…) and the work undertaken in the project Encompas2 to define and develop a platform prototype that will ease and automate the integrated management (provision, configuration, monitoring / supervision, diagnosis and problem resolution) of the home network.

2. Advanced supervision and self-management in the home network

A big problem for operators and service providers is the huge operating expenses of the services deployed in the These can affect the Quality of Service (QoS) of other services.

One of the main objectives of GENIO’s platform is the advanced home network supervision. GENIO will apply autonomic technologies to the home network configuring, supervision, diagnosis and healing tasks, aiming at maximising their automation and intelligence when dealing with the arising events and alarms. The objective is to avoid unnecessary load to centralized management system when dealing with local events.

  • Developing a home network management framework, that correlates and optimizes local home network elements with global home network using self-management properties.
  • Developing a piloting system able to provide self-management functions both on the home network elements and the different devices.
  • Developing a network management solution that can treat a meshed network of mixed devices connected to the coax, wireless, phoneline and powerline networks as a virtual single network, by providing the ability to monitor and troubleshoot this new type of home network.

GENIO will provide modules based on a hybrid rule-based inference engine (artificial intelligence), which integrate soft-computing techniques like neural network and fuzzy systems with traditional production rule systems based on Rete algorithms

3. Ubiquitous access to home contents

GENIO will develop an innovative solution (based on UPnP protocol) that will enable ubiquitous access to content, so that content is not tied to a specific device and/or location.

  • GENIO will investigate high bit rate technologies wired & wireless, allowing to download or to exchange content in a very short time, for short range communications with low power consumption, thus suitable for mobile devices and in-room applications (e.g. UWB, 60 GHz, VLC, Mediaxtream)
  • The project will propose a unified catalogue for all content type: Home Network; broadcasted content; on-demand content, etc) and for all devices. This unified catalogue will allow users to browse and consume all content available even while on the move but also to search within this catalogue for relevant content.
  • GENIO will work in  home to home communications in order to enable personal content distribution but also dissemination of commercial content and services

4. Personalization in home network

GENIO will also work on the personalization of the services based on some guidelines form ETSI (ETSI EG 202 325 and ETSI HF STF 342). A personalized television system will be developed taking into account the user’s profiles and their wishes. The television is by nature watched by several people and there is a need to manage both “family” mode and “user” modes.

GENIO will also address issues that affect the customization of content and services, so that on the basis of a unified catalog and a user profile is possible to maximize the entertainment experience for the user

The main aspects are:

  • Subscription authentication issues that allow the personalization of configuration in the home devices to access the services the user has subscripted to.
  • Personalization of the services themselves that the user is subscribed to, to the needs or preferences of the user, by means of the use of a User Profile Management System.

5. Authentication

Though it isn’t the main objective of the project, a Authentication mechanism will be defined. This is important because the concept of Extended Home (remote access to home contents, “home mobility” concept) implies the ideas of access using different devices, ubiquitous, different contents and home mobility
