Deliverables:

WP1 Services and Applications

  • 30-12-2007 - Publication of "WP1M1 Voice applications technical requirements and user scenarios". Amended version on 27-07-2008

Executive Summary:

One of the challenges that EnComPAs2 is going to address is the potential integration between the IMS/GSM core network infrastructure and the home Residential Gateway (RG). So far, these two domains are likely to be separate in the industry, having different major players and separate standard organizations.

EnComPAs2 will establish an interface between the IMS infrastructure and the extended home residential gateway. This interface will enable the update of the user presence at the core network components, and hence, the control of network services (such as voice calls) based on the presence and other parameters. The interface is to be implemented between the Telefonica RMS (Remote Management System) platform, which remotely controls the extended home environment, via TR069 protocol, and the IMS server developed by Starhome. The residential gateway, located at home, can identify a mobile handset via UPnP (Universal Plug & Play). This indication will be transferred to the RMS platform, and from there, via SOAP interface, to the Hybrid HSS component (being developed by WP3). The Hybrid HSS is acting as a global presence server, receiving location and presence triggers from all networks.

This document will present a few use cases for residential gateway presence-based session control. The session management is done via SIP, as is the case for the IMS/Next Generation Networks. Finally, the document will describe the high level architecture, and the technical requirements will be derived.

  • 31-01-2008 - Publication of "WP1D4 Application Scenarios". Amended version on 22-07-2008

Executive Summary:

The mission of the Encompas2 project is to increase the user acceptance of networked systems and applications within the Extended Home concept, by enabling and creating innovative interoperable value-added networked services, including scenarios and services virtually anywhere.

This document defines the different scenarios that will be implemented in the demonstrator and validated in the field trials (WP4). During the field trials, it will be checked the level of acceptance the users have about these new applications and services. These scenarios are meant to show the capabilities of EnCompas2 platform.

Although it is expected that all the defined scenarios are implemented in the final demonstrators, there might appear architectural or design limitations that can make that some of them cannot be implemented.

  • 07-02-2008 - Publication of "WP1D5 Voice Applications Detailed Design ". Amended version on 22-07-2008

Executive Summary:

One of the challenges that EnComPAs2 is going to address is the potential integration between the IMS/GSM core network infrastructure and the home Residential Gateway (RG). So far, these two domains are likely to be separate in the industry, having different major players and separate standard organizations.

The FMC and quad-play trends are leading into a convergence of the telephony core networks and the home gateway infrastructures. Major vendors (such as Ericsson) are having initial plans for integration between IMS and the home network.

EnComPAs2 will establish an interface between the IMS infrastructure and the extended home remote management platform. This interface will enable the update of the user presence at the core network components, and hence, the control of network services (such as voice calls) based on the presence and other parameters.

This document describes the detailed design of the voice applications, which are part of WP1. The service is described in WP1M1, “Voice Applications Technical requirements and User Scenarios”. The voice use case is centered on the user presence at the home environment, and call routing of mobile calls to the SIP client of the mobile device.

The architecture consists of the following main entities: (1) SIP server + Media Gateway (2) the presence server, which is used during call routing (3) the Residential Gateway remote management platform, which reports the home presence to the presence server.

  • 12-05-2008 - Publication of "WP1D3 Ecosystem Aware Design Principles"

Executive Summary:

This deliverable is enclosed in task 1 of WP1 work package. This task studies ecosystem characteristics and interconnections between various components of the expanded digital home environment and aims to develop understanding of how home information systems and their components could be ecosystem-aware.

In this task, special emphasis will be put on the analysis of what type of personal content people need to manage in the home environment and elsewhere, adding the "extended home" concept, and how the creation and use of the media could be made as seamless and context aware as possible.

First, this deliverable defines the extended home concept, in which is focused EnComPAs2. The extended home enables the user to have similar application experiences as if he was accessing services in his primary home. The deliverable presents then an introduction to some network technologies for the digital home. After that, it treats about service discovery protocols, which allow devices join and leave the home network and also learn about other connected devices without prior configuration. This kind of protocols is fundamental for the objective of ecosystem aware design. Later, the deliverable focuses on protocols for the intercommunication between multiple home networks, which are essential for the extended home scenarios. Finally, ecosystem aware design principles are developed. These principles are the main objective of this deliverable.

  • 12-05-2008 - Publication of "WP1M6 Application Components Architecture"

Executive Summary:

This deliverable is part of the WP1 work package, and it presents the design of the technical architecture and the enablers and building blocks that will facilitate the Social Media applications, taking into account the input from Task 1 concerning ecosystemic awareness.

Task WP1D9 integrates contributions from other work packages and external projects into the design of the architecture. The architecture aims for seamlessness and context awareness, and for more people centric rather than device centric technical solutions.

After describing the EnComPAs2 architecture, the deliverable also presents the OSGi Service Platform that is an open, common architecture for service providers, developers, software vendors, gateway operators and equipment vendors to develop, deploy and manage services in a coordinated fashion.

This task also focus on the usage of building blocks necessary for the development and design of the EnComPAs2 applications so they make sense from the point of view of users. The applications will be extracted from the scenarios defined in Task 3 and the building blocks will be identified from the practises related to these applications.

  • 14-05-2008 - Publication of "WP1D7 Social Media Applications Iteration 1"

Executive Summary:

This document is included in task 3 of WP1. This task maps practices and applications that relate to social media use, and produces catalogues that inform the design of new digital tools and systems that may be used in similar ways or for similar purposes, or that may replace current ones. Based on that mapping, it develops a set of Social Media Applications, based on the system architecture developed in Task 1, in a co-design process in close collaboration with users.

In order to introduce Social Media Applications, it can be said that there is an emerging genre of systems that are based on personal media creation and its subsequent collaborative refinement within user communities. One of the aspects that makes SMAs interesting and a promising research and development area is its potential to create socially more meaningful communicative structures that deliver real value to people. The emergence of Social Media Applications is one of the major new trends in the evolution of the media environment. Private content creation, especially taking the form of SMA’s, will be driving the use of digital network capacity, and will also be the purpose that most media equipment will be used for in the future.

This deliverable describes the scenario and the architecture of every Social Media Application proposed for EnComPas2. In WP1D12 these applications will be deeper studied.

  •  10-09-2008 - Publication of "WP1D9 Technical Enablers"

WP3 Context Awareness and Profiling

  • 15-05-2008 - Publication of "WP3D1 Profiling System"

Executive Summary:

The system requirements are based on the WP3 description, as being described in the Project Description:

This server includes the location on the user, whether he or she is at home (in the home zone) or not, as a basis to determine the change of context.

 ..

Presence and Context Manager (PCM) is an essential infrastructure for seamless mobility and session handover, as well as for Social Media Applications.

The following figure is taken from the PD as well and summarizes the concept of the implementation:

Figure 1 - Presence and Context Manager (PCM) framework

The component developed in the scope of WP3 is an IMS Hybrid HSS, which is a global presence server acting as an IMSA HSS, which is capable of managing the user profile for the home zone services, and also contain the current location of the user, whether she is at the home zone or not, for providing home zone services.

One of the services provided by Encompas2 is the voice call routing based on the home zone presence, as described by the following figure (taken from the WP1 application scenarios document). The Hybrid HSS is the server used for the call routing, either to the GSM or the WiFi/SIP.

 Slide1

Figure 2 - Voice call routing based on the Home Zone presence

On the other hand, as part of the PCM, the Context Awareness System is described in this deliverable. Context-aware computing is an area which studies methods and tools for discovering, modeling and utilizing contextual information. In order to offer personalized services in this system, it is necessary to make data acquisition creating user profiles. Contextual information is typically required to implement context-aware applications that can process the sensed information and trigger an appropriate action. The approach taken in WP3 is a centralized one with the following components:

•      Context Manager coordinating the rest of elements

•      Context Providers communicating their context data

•      Context Query Processor for reading, parsing and executing the database-styled queries that are passed to the Context Aware system

•      Context Database storing context data

•      Ontology Manager for the integration of intelligent agents

•      Context-Aware Agents that make use of context to provide task-relevant information and services to users

In Figure 1 we can see a user profile is necessary. To create this user profile, the system will work by collecting data from users. The different methods that can be used have been analyzed and are presented in this document.

WP4 Pan-European demonstrators and testing sites

  • 29-04-2008 - Publication of "WP4D1: Trial and lab planning document - first version"

Executive Summary:

This document describes the activities and planning of the B@Home and EnComPAs2 end-user field trial with the ConnecTV service in The Netherlands. It describes the goal, tasks and timeplanning of the field trial and gives a short description of the ConnecTV service.

The goal of the field trial is to perform an end-user trial of the broadband entertainment service ConnecTV. This service operates on a service platform for provisioning broadband services to the home that is very similar to the EnComPAs platform that is being extended in EnComPAs2. As part of a joint effort between B@Home and EnComPAs2, ConnecTV is being trialed at small scale with end-users at home with around 50 homes in the vicinity of Enschede in the eastern part of The Netherlands. The trial is performed by TNO ICT with the support of two organizations NDIX and Casanet. TNO ICT is involved as the developer of the ConnecTV service and its potential business models and as service provider of the service in the trial. Casanet is the owner of the commercial fiber-to-the-home environment of 8000 homes in Enschede and main point of contact towards its end-users. NDIX is the network provider between Casanet and service provider side in the trial and is a provider of closed user groups in the trial.

The field trial includes three main tasks:

·          technical implementation and execution

·          evaluation of the value proposition of the ConnecTV service

·          assessment of possibilities for commercial exploitation

The first task is concerned with the technical work and support that is necessary to realize the trial. It includes preparation, testing, installation and configuration of the ConnecTV service at the various homes of the selected groups of end-users. It also includes the technical support during the period that the service is used in the trial.

The second task is concerned with the evaluation of the value proposition of the service and its different functionalities. This includes the selection of groups, the set-up of questionnaires and logging features, the actual measurement of the effects of the usage of the service and the evaluation of these results to a higher level of conclusions.

This third is concerned with the assessment of the possibilities to commercially exploit the service. This includes the definition of one or more constellations of stakeholders around ConnecTV, the active selection of service providers for ConnecTV that are potentially willing to commercialise the service and a more detailed business case description for each of the constellations.

The total duration of the trial is one year and is executed during 2007.

·         The first half year is used (1) to prepare the trial, fine-tune and test the service and install and configure it at the various homes (2) to find user groups, set-up questionnaires and perform a "0-meting", and (3) to set-up a first version of the business plan in close cooperation with potential service providers.

·         The second half year is used (1) to actually run the trial and technically support it, (2) to measure and evaluate the service and (3) to finalize the business plan based on the evaluation results.

  • 22-05-2008 - Publication of "WP4D3 - WP4D5 Trial evaluation and facts book – first version". Final version published on 20-05-2009

Executive Summary:

This document describes the results of the field trial executed by TNO ICT with the “social television”service ConnecTV in the second half of 2007 in Enschede, The Netherlands. ConnecTV has been developed within the Freeband project B@home. This project aimed at the development of innovative broadband services, new business models and technical architectures for end-to-end provisioning of broadband services.

In the field trial, a number of different, new social TV functionalities have been studied via the use of the ConnecTV service. The main research objective was to get insight in the effect of these new functionalities on the viewing behaviour and watching-experience: are people going to watch TV differently by using the ConnecTV service? Does their perception of TV watching change? Are members of buddy groups more attached to each other when they can see which program their buddies are watching and they can send viewing recommendations to each other?

Another objective of the field trial was to get insight in the business case for the provisioning and exploitation of the ConnecTV service by a “ConnecTV provider”.

In order to measure the behaviour and experience, a 0-measurement questionnaire was used at the beginning of the trial and a 1-measurement questionnaire was used at the end of the trial. In addition, an experimental measurement tool was used to log the activities of end-users in the trial and multiple choice questions (experience samples) were asked to the end-user via the TV-screen.

The ConnecTV field trial was executed at 50 households in the city of Enschede in The Netherlands. It was divided in 3 phases: a 0-fase in which the end-users could only watch TV via the ConnecTV service and 2 trial-phases in which they could also use the ConnecTV functionalities around buddies and recommendations. Unfortunately, during the role-out of the ConnecTV service some technical problems occurred. Therefore, less end-users where connected than originally planned and some end-users could only be connected in the second phase.

In short, the main conclusions from the field trial are:

  • With respect to the trial implementation and measurement methods:
  • The end-users were not representative for the Dutch population
  • Technical problems have negatively influenced the use of the ConnecTV service
  • The communication possibilities of the ConnecTV service should be improved
  • The objective measurement data was only partly usable
  • The measurement of experience samples has given rise to some irritation
  • With respect to the ConnecTV service and its functionalities:
  • Although during the trial the usage of the service decreased, end-users kept on using the service
  • “Go to the same channel as my buddy” was the most used and most popular functionality
  • Watching recommendations were followed half of the time, sending recommendation gave more fun than receiving one
  • “Watching together?”-recommendations were exceptionally often accepted
  • Dynamic information about watching behaviour of buddies is useful and fun
  • Zapping to the most popular channel and the “theme-buddy” was less popular
  • With respect to the effect of ConnecTV on watching behaviour:
  • Due to the ConnecTV service the amount of watching hours is slightly decreased, since end-users were most probably more aware of their watching behaviour and the content they watched.
  • Due to the ConnecTV service end-users performed less zapping behaviour
  • End-users noticed that their watching behaviour is slightly changed thanks to ConnecTV
  • With respect to the effect of ConnecTV on watching experience:
  • The ConnecTV experience increases the feeling of connection and attraction between buddies
  • At the other emotional varieties little or no effect has been measured
  • With respect to the possibilities to make a positive business case with ConnecTV
  • Half of the end-users would like to use an upgraded version of the ConnecTV service once available
  • The ConnecTV service should provide more functionalities in line with the social TV functionalities already available
  • The ConnecTV service should be provided for free as an add-on service
  • Application of advertisements is acceptable for half of the end-users

The full document is available in Dutch and is titled “Pilot ConnecTV resultaten gebruiksonderzoek”. It is available in PDF and can be found in the FTP repository of the project.
