Main Focus
The general business case of DRMSolutionNG project is related toe fixed/mobile scenarios where devices could use innovative user oriented services through fixed or mobile networks and enjoy value added contents protected with the most appropriate DRM technology for each of them.
The solution will be focused on the mobile environment, solving its own special problems and taking advantage of its special features, moving towards real convergence.
Its services must be developed in a trust environment for all the members of the value chain including the final user, with the latest DRM related specifications using strong cryptographic techniques.
The services will mainly include innovative functionalities of OMA specifications such as audio and video streaming protection, interoperability with other DRM technologies, secure content sharing and support for new business models (cross selling, subscription, push delivery, legal P2P services, rewarded superdistribution, etc.)
This solution will cover many of the value chain members main needs, creating a suitable framework for a convergent digital content market with enhanced new services oriented to the end user. Its main business case will be detailed next as well as the main goals it has.
DRMSolutionNG is an evolution of previous “DRMSolution” CELTIC project with enhanced functionalities and innovative value added services over them.
This new proposal leverages on the generic DRM business cases:
- promotions;
- subscriptions;
- billing the sender or receiver for the right acquisition (digital gift);
- preview;
- peer to peer distribution;
- superdistribution.
The above mentioned cases are extended with new scenarios made possible thanks to the interoperability and flexibility of the solution:
- purchasing digital content for a mobile device (handset, PDA, PMA) and enjoying it on a desktop computer, with the same associated rights;
- purchasing digital content for a desktop computer and enjoying it on a mobile device, with the same associated rights;
- migrating a purchased right to a next generation of compliant device;
- sharing content transparently among different devices in a user domain;
- ad-hoc sharing to allow rendering of the content on a new compliant device for a limited time period (for example during a party);
- acquiring protected content from different vendors in a transparent way.

As depicted in the above figure, these new business cases leverage on four aspects.
- Acquisition interoperability: the solution supports acquisition of OMA DRM and Microsoft DRM rights, and can be extended post issuance to plug-in another DRM method into the generic framework in a secure way. Thus all different licenses are kept at one location, limiting the risks of licence loss and confusion, and allowing the content to be enjoyed in different compliant device with better user friendliness.
- Consumption interoperability: the solution supports viewing the acquired content on multiple devices (handset, PDA, PMA, desktop computer), leveraging on the standard interoperability between OMA DRM consumers (SRMP/SCE) and adding an additional interoperability layer between general DRM consumers – a decoding layer can be downloaded to the unsupported device and the DRM agent to enjoy the protected content in a secure way.
- Exchange interoperability: the solution supports moving the acquired rights on another compliant device thanks to the standard interoperability between OMA DRM right holders (SRMP) and updatable exchange mechanisms for other DRM algorithms embedded in the generic framework designed for the project.
- Conversion interoperability: when allowed by both DRM issuers or when using a generic DRM container such as DReaM, the platform can provide an automatic and secure conversion on the agent side of the acquired rights from one format to another.
